To allay any confusion from the start, there are two Andratx's. The ancient small town of Andratx lies inland from Puerto d'Andratx - or Port Andratx - which is a stunningly beautiful resort tucked snugly into and clustered around a gorgeous natural bay on the southwest coast of Mallorca. There will be many Mallorcan city, town and resort names that you may be instantly familiar with, even if you have never set foot on the island but, as Port Andratx is not served by British tour or package holiday operators, the chances are that this is a new name to you. Port Andratx is most commonly discovered by independent travellers in search of somewhere different, or by those 'in the know'. It is also very popular with celebrities - whose luxury homes can be seen clinging to the sides of cliffs and hills - and the yachting set, lending an air of exclusivity to Port Andratx. There can be no denying that the huge yachts of the rich and famous moored in Port Andratx' spectacular marina add a considerable amount of additional glamour to the scene. Despite this, it retains a Mallorcan authenticity that remains untainted due to the absence of mass tourism.

Oddly for a Spanish coastal resort, there is no beach at Port Andratx. There are small sandy coves, some of which are exclusive to residents, but the nearest main beach is a 3 kilometre drive to Camp de Mar. But there are golf courses, fine seafood restaurants, swish waterfront cafés and low-key nightlife to keep the laid-back clientele more than happy.

Being such an upmarket resort, it stands to reason that prices of property in Port Andratx can reflect this status - but, there are most certainly bargains to be had, even when considering the most palatial of properties.
