Guide to Property in Majorca - Cala d'Or
In the history of Spanish tourism, the delightful
Mallorca resort of Cala d'Or is something of a veteran, having been
brought to the attention of the wider world by a community of respected
radical artists in the 1930s. Word spread about their 'discovery'
of this tranquil, picturesque fishing village, and it was not too
long before visitors started to arrive, keen to see what the fuss
was all about. Even back then, those that came were so entranced by
the beauty of Cala d'Or (meaning 'Golden Cove') and the surrounding
area that they began to build or buy holiday homes in the village.
Although the 21st Century Cala d'Or has changed and expanded dramatically
since those heady days, it seems little has changed in this respect
for 70 years!
Today, the desire to own a Cala d'Or property has intensified, particularly
as it has gained a solid reputation as an excellent family resort
that caters superbly for children. And Cala d'Or certainly has much
to commend it, including no less than 7 beaches of various sizes,
but all with white sand lapped by clear, shallow waters. Watersports
on offer at the larger beaches include scuba diving, windsurfing,
sailing and jet skiing. Glass-bottomed boats also run trips out to
sea to study the aquatic life of the area.
Cala d'Or is well known as a chic, stylish resort without being pretentiously
exclusive or over-the-top, and this is mirrored in both the nightlife
and shopping experiences that it offers. There are a few good nightclubs,
many bars and cocktail bars, most with a certain amount of swank.
This is not a resort to head for if you are looking for wild, all
night partying, as everything is usually wrapped up by 2am. As for
shopping, Cala d'Or's reputation is unparalleled in the whole of Mallorca,
with every designer boutique imaginable alongside shops selling locally-produced
souvenirs, leather goods, glassware and so on.
